The low value of the US dollar against the Euro has forced BMW to change its production plans for the next-generation Z4 sports car. At the moment, the Z4 is built alongside the X5 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, but it’s expected the new model, due in 2010, will be built at BMW’s Regensburg plant in Germany according to a report by the German Press Association. The company has decided it will build only SUVs and crossovers in USA, where sales are relatively high for such vehicles anyway.
There are a few other factors that have also played into this decision. Firstly, the new X3 is currently built by Magna Steyr in Austria but production will also move to the Spartanburg plant sometime in 2010. In addition, BMW’s forthcoming X6 crossover will also be built at the South Carolina plant, making it a hub for SUV manufacturing for BMW. Building all three “X-series” models in one location can conceivably lead to better economies of scale. In any case, CEO Norbert Reithofer has publicly stated that he wants to see production lift to 200,000 units or more (up from 105,000 in 2006) to help hedge against fluctuating exchange rates.
There are also rumors that BMW will be taking the new Z4 upmarket to better compete with the new models from Porsche and Mercedes, and buyers would expect to receive a premium “Made in Germany” product.

Sounds good. The interior in particular needs a much more expensive feeling for the next generation, including all the new electronics like iDrive

Also, I think it's perfect of the next gen Z4 to be made in Germany at the Regensburg plant. Makes much more sense than making this car in the USA. The whole X-line family will keep the Spartanburg people more than busy I'd say (X5, next gen X3, X6.....)

X1, if made, will go to Magna Steyr I assume....

The real reason why E89 Z4 will be built in Regensburg is folding metal roof. And platform based on E90 platform. So it makes more sense & it's more efficient to produce Z4 in the same factory where E93 cabrio is built.

Spartanburg plant will be specialized in X-family (X6, X6, X4, X3) production.

Magna Steyer will probably get MINI crossover production.

So it's E98 ? That sounds much better than the E89 usually seen, in Autobild for instance.
Too close from E85, and not really related to the E90 technology.

Sorry, of course it's E89. I mistyped the code. Sorry.

Will correct the text ...
