To a racing driver, who is used to slick tyres and fish-sharp reflexes, it’s wallowy and slithery and horrid. But to me it’s brilliant. Mostly because you can drive for more than 10 minutes without your head coming off. I also liked the styling, the ride — provided you stay out of the sport settings — the engine’s urgency, the fluidity of the responses and the elegance of the interior. Though, that said, this is not a car you can drive in cuff links. Because the centre console is set up for left-hand drive, every time you change gear your silver dog turd, or whatever, will hit the iDrive knob, which in extreme circumstances can cause the cabin to be filled with rap noises.

However, I’ve thought quite hard about this and can confidently say that the Z4, with its folding metal roof and softer feel, is now the best of the medium-sized sports cars. Certainly, I prefer it to the Boxster and the Mercedes SLK.

However, if it’s a real driving experience you want, forget the ultimate driving machine. Because, as I now realise, it isn’t.

The Clarksometer

The ultimate driving machine, or so I thought

Since the new Z4 is more like a SLK ever before, of course he likes it.

Is the Z2 going to cover the sub $45K area that the Z4 has now left? I just configured a base Z4 and it came to $48K!

You know what's even more shocking?

He used to have a 3.0 CSL, bought a Z1 for his wife and put the M5 in his Top 10 best cars ever made list. What's more? He praised the M3 CSL, the M3 CSL, the M5 E60 and the new M3 E92.

Quite shocking isn't it? And if my memory serves me right, in 1996 he said the, then, new 5-Series E39 was "perfect".

Very, very, very shocking, indeed.

And I don't disagree with you my point is that with BMWs of late he has had nothing but bad things to say.

Who cares what he has to say anyway? Whether it's a good OR bad review? Jeremy Clarkson ceased to be a genuine motoring journalist years ago. His reviews are for entertainment purposes only and anybody who takes whatever he says seriously is being misguided.
