The harmonics of a V10 gradually get better past 16k rpm where as a V8 progressively gets worse until it shakes itself apart.

LOL, who cares about that, unless you have a motorcycle????
What Sunny said is 100% true: the new ///M V8 revs higher than the V10 (I think it's 100 rpm more in fact)

On a different, but related, note: Swedish AMS compared the engines of the Audi TT and found that the diesel was the best sounding of them all. That would work well in a roadster, right? In a drop top that is very important.

Well, I don't know about that TT, but I have never heard a diesel making a beautiful sound. There is not a single diesel in BMWs lineup making a nice sound imo. Not the 123d and not the 335d! Gasoline still sounds infinitely better. That imo is the biggest downside of the current diesels....that freaking sound.

I have experiences with BMW 3000 ccm 6 diesel engine and "tractor" sound can be only heard when you stand on place with open windows and got gearbox in position "D" . If you put into N or P car became quiet. When driving engine sound can't be heard and while you accelerate it souns really nice, similar to gasoline engine.. Friend who got 525i and once when he drove with me in my car he told "I bought gasoline engine because I dont want to have "tractor" sound..." I asked him back "Do you know which engine is in this car ? " He said: "It feels faster than mine.. 530i ?" He couldn't believe that its diesel engine.

Only problem in our country is that diesel fuel got higher price than gasoline. So if difference between car powered with diesel and gasoline engine is less than 3 l / 100 km , I would rather decide for gasoline engine...

I don't think you can volunteer. You get an invite from BMW. There was one for X6 in New Jersey, US. They show a replica of the car and make you sign a non-disclosure and ask your views. Its like public opinion before car is released.
