Not a joke!

OK, there's also an hDrive ...

sDrive = regular petrol / diesel RWD with some gizmos
eDrive = electric drive
xDrive = regular petrol / diesel AWD (with some gizmos)

hDrive = petrol/diesel - electric/hydrogen hybrid drive
I guess BMW will need to put a jargon buster on their website so that people can get explanations for idrive, sdrive, edrive, DKG, SAC, SAV, PAS and efficiency dynamics. Getting a little carried away don't ya think?

Kinda reminds me of the vid where Clarkson describes what BMW drivers are like

sorry, not eye brows, but the E85 has exactly the same phenomena and in its most extreme form: this insistance on thickening the headlight all the way up to the hood area. instead of having the top of the headlights match the top of the grill or at least close enough, it actually goes on all the way till it's eating up on the hood area. this means, where you're supposed to see metal, the hood, the body of the car, above it's face, you are still seeing glass from the headlights because they have too much vertical thickness.
i tried once to cover the upper portion of the z4's headlights (about one third) in photoshop, it was a different car all together. shame, whoever designed that, shame.

E89 does the same, this time officializing this area as an "eyebrow" (a la mercedes and bmw 7 series). thankfully though, someone had to good sense of linking the top of the headlights with the top of the grill with a line. so that we know these are not parts of different cars. that's why the front looks much better.

Looks somewhat weird, especially the brushed metal kidneys but that's not saying much since the picture doesn't really offer a proper view of the car.

BTW we had this sDrive & Co. nomenclature speculation/discussion a year ago: http://www.germancarzone.com/new-bmw...tml#post262665 (Latest BMW Trademark Filings)

So how would they badge a car which has all 3 drives of above. sexDrive? I am sure it will be a hit.

Side BMW logo is a traditional design trademark for BMW roadsters (507, Z1, Z3, Z8, Z4 ...).

Not at all. New drives (like electric, hybrid etc) demanded new designations. And since these drives will be marketed & advertised, they are a part of the badge.

Eg.
320d xDrive ... 3=name of series, 20=engine power hierarchy, d= engine type (diesel), xDrive=type of drive(AWD)

X1 sDrive23i ... X1=name of series, sDrive=type of drive(RWD), 23=engine power hierarchy, i=engine type (petrol)

Z4 sDrive35i
755i hDrive
X3 xDrive30d
Z2 eDrive20

Don't ask me what will be a designation for AWD hybrid (eg. for X6 hybrid).

Either X6 xDrive55ih, or X6 hDrive55ix

Re: Next generation BMW Z4 E89 - part II (first FEP pics incl. !!!)

Those silk matt grey/aluminium kidneys are so hot ! I wonder if we'll be able to have them on non-sdrive35i...

I think today only the z4 3.0si have them and it's not possible to take them for a lower engine, even as an option... correct me if I'm wrong

I see minor style cues to GINA on the grill.

absolutely love the front, I don't see what's not to like but whatever, people have their own loves+hates. Definitely an improvement from the old z4

What are you talking about? There is no such vehicle. Furthermore MB doesn't use 4Matic and Blutec in the line with the engine size like BMW does. Otherwise it would be ML4Matic320, which it isn't. Big difference. BMW uses "Xdrive" in the actual designation, but 4Matic and Bluetec are after the fact. All these different xxxDrive designations are pretty silly IMO, especially for a regular 2WD roadster like the Z4. What is the point? BMW has Mercedes' cured habit of complicating things for no apparent reason other than for the sake of doing so.
