Cars like the M3 are more to get to high top speeds on the straights, and beat lap times. I am afraid the V8 will just be too heavy for the Z4, reducing the drivability.
The old Z4 M had the I6 (343bhp), and the new V8 (414bhp) is 15kg lighter, so I don't see there being a problem. I expect the V8 will find it's way into the forthcoming Z4 coupe at least. And with a carbon fibre roof.

wouldn't the V8 induce heavier components around it?
does it have much higher torque than the 35twinturbo? (too lazy to check). if it does, than a bigger gearbox might be needed?
also, i suppose the mounts and some stuff around the engine and transmission axe will get heavier.

but don't ge me wrong, a V8 Z4 is an incredible idea, and will give an irrefutable argument in favor of the Z when it is facing down the facelift Boxster S in those hundreds of tests that magazines and media are now preparing.

Re: Next generation BMW Z4 E89 - part II (first FEP pics incl. !!!)

I checked the internet, the 3.5i twin turbo has more torque than the 4.0l V8 of the M3!!! impressive!

Z4M E85 6cyl: 340 bhp at 7900 rpm, 365 nm
335i twin-t 6cyl: 306 bhp0 at 5,600 rpm; 407 Nm @ 1,400 rpm
E92 M3 4l V8: 420bhp at 8,300 rpm and 400 N·m at 3,900 rpm

So I guess this means there is a chance that the V8 will not need a bigger gearbox than an E89 with the twin turbo engine.

N53 is newer and has Direct Injection. It would make no sense to use older version of the engine that doesn't have Efficient Dynamics features.

Official figures:

Z4 M: 252 kW (343 hp) / 365 Nm
335i: 225 kW (306 hp) / 400 Nm
E92 M3: 309 kW (420 hp) / 400 Nm

The newer version of the 3.0 I6 TT in the 740i has more power and torque:

F01 740i: 240 kW (326 hp) / 450 Nm

Uhm no. N52 is the old version without DI.

And to all you guys talking about the weight of the M V8: it weighs LESS than the old 3.2 I6 M engine. Weight is not the issue here. Nobody talks about the weight of the current Z4 M engine.

Re: Next generation BMW Z4 E89 - part II (first FEP pics incl. !!!)

Weight is definately not an issue The issue is the axiom of the management that if MASS>mass and PRICE>price then ENGINE OUTPUT>engine output. The truth though is that id doesn't work that way...

I know, I was suprised too when I have seen pre-official brochure, but there is written N52 and not N53.
