Sadly luxury car sales aren't doing very well at the moment and with increasing petrol prices coupled with stricter emission controls, I don't think the V8 will make it. Additionally the M3 is a very heavy car and might be out paced by a V8 Z4. Lastly I don't think the sales of the M-Z4 are very good and the sales might not justify the cost of R&D.

IMO the new Z4 will be more of luxury car than the current generation. A Z4-35i model with a slightly modified engine and LSD will be the top-end model.

Why not a Z4M with a uber-tuned version of the I6 3.0l TT engine (N54?) of thex35i cars offering about 350hp and featuring a lot of EDs and electric motors/gizmos?

Highly unluckily to happen, huh?
Not so highly I think. The X5/6 M will have a tuned V8 twinturbo. A tuned version of the 3.0 I6 sounds pretty logical when you thin about fuel economy and such.

Not that unlikely. At least I guess we will see something like what you have just described within the next generation.

Well a 2 door sportscar should be faster than a sedan right?

I am on my knees and I prey. I prey, I prey, I prey. And I beg the speed-devils amoung the BMW workforce to build that Z4 V8 M version!
The M V8 is just great! The M is only to heavy... with the talents of a Z4 the M V8 must be a beauty beyond words....

Re: Next generation BMW Z4 E89 - part II (first FEP pics incl. !!!)

My first reaction the V8 was YES!!! But thinking it over a bit, I guess it doesn't really work with the Z4. The purpose of the Z4 in my opinion is to have a great drivers car, agile and light (ahum) ideally suited for the fun (mountain) roads. Cars like the M3 are more to get to high top speeds on the straights, and beat lap times. I am afraid the V8 will just be too heavy for the Z4, reducing the drivability.

Don't get me wrong - I would love a bit more power and torque, but the biturbo is already a big step forward from the current 3.0. And, at leat for me, it will be 'sufficient'.

What I would like to see however, is multiple settings on traction and stability control, ideally the same for damping control. The ride of the current Z4 is just a bit too hard for the day to day and city use, and traction and stability control are just a bit too aggressive kicking in when you really want to have fun.

I guess we can count on there being an electronically adjustable chassis in the next Z4.
