The Z4 was face lifted early last year and with the test mules for the coming model rolling on the roads with heavy camo, my estimate is that the new Z4 won't hit show room floors until late 2008 or early 2009. So it's up to you if you want to pull a trigger now or wait about 18-22 months for the new one.

My opinion is that the new Z4, no matter how much improved, won't deviate much from the current design. And if it does, the designers will find it a hard time to top the current one. It really is good design than lasts, more than anything else.

If I were you I'd jump for the Z4M.

The M coupe is a rarety, and it breathes the last of the M straight six engines, a real collectible if you ask me. However if you plan on using your car as a daily driver, in and out of traffic, I'd suggest something a little less high strung. If you're a tall person I'd also highly suggest looking elsewhere, this car wasn't made for tong legged variety; headroom is also quite tight.

Regarding E85 debut in October 2002, and expected 7-year lifecycle, BMW are to debut new E89 Z4 in Fall 2009. I doubt the car will hit the markets any earlier. Expect M model approx. in early 2011.

E89 will be larger, with folding metal roof, better drivetrain, better tech, better chassis etc. It will be better car in all aspects. It will also look more modern - wearing new generation design elements as seen on CS Concept.

IMO you can surely go for a current E86 Z4 coupe, and trade it sometimes in 2010 for a new E89 Z4.

I'd think w/ a folding hardtop there'd be no need for a coupe, except for Motorsports programs which would necessitate the need for a fixed roof. I also fully expect the next Z4 to look quite different from the current model, though retaining some of the Z4's signature design feats(i.e. scalloped character line, etc.).
