It's quite feasible that what you saw was a parade of 35i and 35d models, since the 35i comes with a black grille whereas the 35d comes with a titanium grille. The diesel models are of course made in the same factory.
In the production timetable we received a few months ago, the 35i production was being started in mid-December '07 whilst 35d production was starting in early January '08. X50i production is not due to start until May '08, so I expect you will not see many X50i models driving around until nearer that time.
