BMW want to promote their new drive systems more: xDrive, sDrive, hDrive, eDrive. So they figured out the new naming system.
xDrive = AWD (with DPC)
sDrive = RWD with active rear differential (DPC)
hDrive = true hybrid
eDRive = mild hybrid (electro motors just helping at acceleration)??? or electric drive ???
And as you know the numbering do not follow the engine displacement anymore: 123d, 323i, 325i, 328i, 528i, 335i, 535d etc It's more complicated now.
Turbo engines (as well NA ones) will have different power outputs, and will be featured in different models.
So ... imagine: eg 330i (3.0L NA 215HP), 330si (3.0L NA 230HP), 330ssi (3.0L NA 272HP) ... 330tti ( 3.0L twin-turbo 300HP), 330ttsi or 330ttsii (3.0L TT 330HP) etc.
Definitely a "no go"!
Therefore:
X6 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive35d, X6 xDrive50i, X6 hDrive30i
Z4 sDrive35i, F5 sDrive50i, F5 xDrive35d
335d
xDrive
535i
sDrive
735d
xDrive
540i
eDrive ??? | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to EnI For This Useful Post: | | | Aficionado

I guess I'm in the minority here. While it's nice, I don't think this serves any real function. But oh well, people with money buy a whole bunch of other crap, this is no exception I guess.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is eagly, but rather lacks any real function (for me) to rationalize this over a normal coupe or a X5. | | | | | Contributor

Again: why do you guys think a car should be all about conventional function ??? Again: what's the function of a roadster? Or a mid-engine exotic supercar? Absolutely no conventional function present. But they all offer joy & satisfaction. So it does X6.
Life is not all about function. Nor is 1-dimensional.
Just like in any other category hybrid genres / styles are very popular: mixing different (eg movie or music) genres into one, different fashion styles into one. People roles in their lives are not 1-dimensional ... they are of hybrid nature: businessman, father, sportsman, husband, etc ... all characteristics blended into one person / personality.
Especially women like higher sitting position ... and a fancy & exciting styling. X6 is a perfect choice for them. So it is for men who like sporty performance high-riding vehicle - if it looks like a coupe: even better. I would opt for X6 over X5 any time. Mind that some customers DO NOT buy SAV for their function - but for the high sitting position & bully appearence. X6 has it all: even more - it adds true sporty & aggressive appearence of a sports coupe.
Some like pop, some opera. And - can you imagine - there are some who just love pop opera (eg Il Divo & Co).
But it's true these are niche styles ... An acquired taste. Just like X6. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to EnI For This Useful Post: | | | Devotee

330i has 272 hp, 335i has 306 hp and the engines can be updated without adding another model (eg. 335i --> 330 hp). I can't see the problem. | | | | | Contributor

What about 325i with 218HP - also 3.0L NA engine? Or 328i with 230HP - also 3.0L NA engine?
All available right now - although not in all markets.
So, what's better:
325i, 328i, 330i, 335i
or
330i, 330si, 330ssi, 330tti .... now imagine AWD on-board: 330xi, 330sxi, 330ssxi, 330ttxi
I guess the majority prefers the first variant. It's just more appealing & simple.
The new system:
X5 xDrive35d
X5 = model
xDrive = promoted drivetrain technology (sDrive = RWD + active rear differential, hDrive = hybrid drive, eDrive = ??? mild hybrid or electric drive ???)
35 = power rang (higher --> more powerful)
d = fuel type (i= petrol, d = diesel)
330i
sDrive
3 = model
30 = power rang (higher --> more powerful)
i = fuel type
sDrive = promoted drivetrain technology | | | | | Devotee

I don't give a rat's ass what the rest of the world thinks. Hell, more that half the idiots in this country voted for "you know who", does that mean that it is OK? I'm an individual, I don't jump on retarded bandwagons. I don't want a F__king company telling me what I need or want, I want the things that suit me.
Anyone in the world can justify anything they ever do (wrong or right), but that doesn't necessarily means that it makes sense. Just because BMW's Head honcho and it's Marketing department can make a good case for this doesn't mean that I'll say: "I guess that makes sense, perhaps I was wrong. I guess the world really does need a cross-over vehicle with less room than a coupe but built like a sleek SUV." Sorry, that don't fly with.
How is my thinking 1-dimensional? Oh, I'm sorry that I wouldn't waste my money on something that isn't what I like. Quote:

I guess the last time I went on a long trip with my family and friends (8 people) through the winter storm we should've taken a sedan, since an SUV obviously doesn't serve any function. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
