This brings into scope my confusion w/ the whole turbocharged engine strategy... I thought these blown engines would replace current crop? No more naturally aspirated engines? The way it sounds w/ your info Eni is that these engines are reserved especially for the "S" variants, though that isn't the case w/ the E92 335?

Turbo engines are here to replace large displacement engines. E.g. 3.0L I6 turbo instead of 3.5L I6 NA. Or 4.0L V8 turbo instead of 5.0L V8 NA. Etc.

We will see two engines of a same displacement: one NA and one turbo. This is the strategy.

E.g. 1.6 + 1.6 turbo instead of 1.8 NA, 2.0 +2.0 turbo instead of 2.5 NA, 3.0 + 3.0 turbo instead of 3.5L NA, 4.0 + 4.0L turbo instead of 5.0L NA, 6.0 + 6.0 turbo instead of ??? NA , etc.

That X5 will get V8 turbo in "S" model is just a coincidence.
Eg. the new V8 turbo will be featured in "non-S" models of e.g. new 6er, 7er, 5er, V5, X6.

10-4, thanks for taking the time out to explain the turbo strategy.

The purist-part in me ins't all that keen on that many turbos... that said, I understand the strategy and might change my mind once I test drive (eventually) the 335i.

You're not going to do a day count down like that guy did for the S class are you?

I'm sure the X5 will be very good, and a V8 turbo, I'm sure BMW will do this right. They wouldn't make turbo engines if they weren't as good as N/A ones!

BTW, when will the 335i get driven, how long is it till the car will get reviewed?

1. No, there will be no such countdown. Only one informative article / teaser per week. Totally unofficial.

2. Absolutely true.

3. After the production begins (June 2006). So expect press drives & reports sometimes in Summer.

Well, only this 4.0 V8 is bit odd..I don´t see meaning of this engine because BMW allready has R6 with similar performance(3.0 TT..)
