No. S63 engine is - just like N64 - a 4.4l TWIN-turbo (two turbochargers) - yet both featuring TwinScroll system. So, they are TwinScroll Twin Turbos - while N55 is TwinScroll (Single) Turbo.

Yet - to make an even bigger mess - BMW started to label all petrol turbo engines "TwinPower Turbo". In the case of two turbo chargers, or only TwinScroll system on board (and just a single turbocharger), or even both ... only one name is used: TwinPower Turbo.

Not even the same turbochargers ... N55 one is made by BorgWarner, N54 turbos are by Mitsubishi, while the ones in N64, S63 & N74 engines are made by Garrett.

Good. I think I know everything now!

N54 = twin turbo, no scroll turbo
N55 = single turbo, twin scroll
N64 = twin turbo, twin scroll
S64 = twin turbo, twin scroll

N74....let me guess.....V12??? Twin turbo, twin scroll?

N64 doesn't feature TwinScroll tech. Nor does TwinTurbo V12 - code N74.

While S64 doesn't exist.
S63 is the engine featured in X5M / X6M - with TwinTurbo TwinScroll.

So, your list should be:

N54 = 3.0L I6 twin turbo, no twin scroll
N55 = 3.0L I6 single turbo, with twin scroll, VALVETRONIC
N64 = 4.4L V8 twin turbo, no twin scroll
S63 = 4.4L V8 twin turbo, with twin scroll
N74 = 6.0L V12 twin turbo, no twin scroll

All engines feature HPI direct injection though.

While all diesel engines feature single turbo with variable turbine geometry - except for M57 3.0L I6 (35d) & N47 2.0L I4 (23d) with Variable (sequential) Twin Turbos.

And there is also Prince petrol engine from MINI 1.6L I4 single turbo, with twin scroll.

So, quite some recent turbo opus from BMW.

A little correction as there's no N64 either:

N54 = 3.0L I6 twin turbo, no twin scroll
N55 = 3.0L I6 single turbo, with twin scroll, VALVETRONIC
N63 = 4.4L V8 twin turbo, no twin scroll
S63 = 4.4L V8 twin turbo, with twin scroll
N74 = 6.0L V12 twin turbo, no twin scroll

Best regards,
south

You're right.

I've missed that one ...

N63B44, of course is the V8 4.4L twin-turbo.
