I remember Wolfgang Reitzle's appraisal of the ML to the BMW Board in 1997 after R&D had finished with one. (translation from German) Ladies and Gentlemen , The Mercedes-Benz ML-Klasse is..... a piece of shit... ![]() |

I remember how some BMW fan boys thought that X5 was a bad idea. | |

![]() | Re: Unstoppable success: 10 years of the bmw x5. LOL, completely wrong. Go read why the 1st X5 was the first ever of it's kind technically. Every other SUV followed suit AFTER the X5.

![]() | Re: Unstoppable success: 10 years of the bmw x5. Nah, I'm not sure how to say it in English. But technically, the X5 was the first of it's kind. Something to do with the way the body is put on the chassis or something. Someone else here might be able to. Sorry. Yeah, exactly. The X5 was the first. ML, Q7, Range, Cayenne, Touareg all came with this after the granddaddy X5.

As for the way these vehicles were built, the Lexus RX was the first completely unibody luxury SUV, not the X5. The ML came first, but it was more truck than most needed, with its body on frame construction (i.e. the way a real truck is built). Then came the softer RX with its unibody construction, then came the X5 with the same type of construction....but it was sportier to drive than either the ML or RX. BMW added sportiness to an existing segment. All this about they invented a segment is ridiculous nonsense. Mercedes started the segment with the ML, then came the RX and the X5. Each bringing something new to the segment, but BMW didn't event the segment. BMW pushed the needle on sportier driving as usual. M
