I disagree that the eyeborows made for an unkempt look.

E65 and E60 brought eyebrows back into carland in the most overt and violent way possible, drawing universal hatred - but eventually... lots of imitators.

I don't have insider knowledge to prove it, but I feel secure claiming that the prominence of todays "eyebrow look" is of BMW's making. Like the E46 era's scalloped headlights, what was at one moment a BMW signiture look became a much imitated design cliche.
