If you look at the sloping roof of the X3 prototype you can see why the second generation X3 is definitely look up to be positioned as a new sports SAV . Taking an apperance from the original ideas as perceived by the first sketches that determined the BMW X6 - less coupe with a more sleeker design at the rear the new X3 follows this to the letter.
Granted that the GLK and Q5 have arrived on the market , The first test for these models has just begun. With BMW already having survived the litmus test on the first X3. There is more freedom to change the perception of the X3 by offering a more dynamic performance orientated activity vehicle with a sporting appearance to match.

That's a bad picture to judge the sloping roof line since the car in the picture is on an angle. Picture a line from the front tire to the back tire and you will recognize a sloping roof line.

If you look at the glasshouse in relation to the roofline you will see how the rear glass area indicating the hoffmeister kick will indeed be a design feature to connect the X3 from 1st generation to second generation.
this feature is now a X3 characteristic which also features on the X1 as a way to approach base model X3 buyers.
If you compare the glasshouse to the roofline you will see that the lower roofline to the rear indicates a shallower glasshouse which showcases that as the glasshouse rises to the rear of the car, the roofline slopes down offering a more shallower rear quarter light which incorporates that raised rear quarter light better than todays X3.
Not the production X6 I was meaning. Go back to what Huckfeldt thought the X6 was going to be - just an X5 with a shallower glasshouse and lower roofline and you will see how this has been brought in for the new X3.
There is now more freedom to take risks as the first generation has cemented the market bringing in competitors. Now that they have their interpretation of the X3 segment within the Q5 and GLK-Klasse. We can move further with the X3 make it more sporty and dynamic in ability and design because we now have the freedom to do so.
