I don't get it. The GLK and the Q5 should be on the same level as the X3. How does the X1 fit into this scheme? I can't see this as being real. It doesn't make sense to me. Its as crazy as Mercedes trying to come up with an AK (SUV version of the A class)

Audi officials already confirmed they had a SUV under Q5 under consideration. Also the latest Audi concept shown in Shanghai: the Audi Cross Coupe Quattro Concept showcases such a vehicle. Cross Coupe is based on a A3 platform, and is slightly larger than A3 Sportback.

So, BMW are seriously considering X1 model, while MB I guess also workin on some B-class based SUV (MLK? BLK?).

Europe loves small & mid-size crossovers / SAVs lately.

Report: BMW 1-Series-Based Softroader Still In The Mix.

Is BMW still planning on a small off-road vehicle based on their 1-series? We haven’t heard much about it in the past year or so, but Autocar believes that the vehicle is very much on the table. In a small print-only article from the April 4 issue, the rumormongers at the UK publication say that the crossover is likely to also form the basis for a mooted-branded MINI SUV.
Autocar points to a BMW employee at the company’s Munich R&D center that was spotted driving a Honda Element as proof that that the company is still up to something. This might not be all that significant of an observation, until one realizes that Honda doesn’t sell that particular model in Germany (or any surrounding countries that we can think of). Of course, the company’s engineers could be benchmarking any of a million different things, from suspension settings to the damping action of a pop-out cupholder. But we digress.
Earlier rumor mill reports peg the vehicle as offering…

…a range of four- to six-cylinder engines running on both gas and diesel power, with all four wheels churning thanks to an all-wheel drive system cribbed from the X3.
If the scuttlebutt is correct, the baby Bimmer is likely to be called “X1,” and it would probably tangle with Land Rover’s Discovery/LR2 in the premium compact SUV class.

In addition to its new V-series of cars, BMW is also rumored to be developing a new SUV model positioned below the current X3. Tipped to called the ‘X1,’ the new model is expected to be unveiled in early 2010 and will be powered by a similar engine lineup as the 1-series on which it’s based. The car’s X-drive 4WD system, however, will be the lifted directly from the larger X3 SUV.
Though we doubt the X1 will be as heavily influenced by the Concept CS as this rendering suggests, there will be some similar features such as the enlarged grille, wrap around headlights and aggressive bumper. According to earlier reports, development has been carried out on the new model although final production plans are yet to be confirmed.
Production numbers are expected to be around the 100,000 mark with prices starting around €30,000. It will be tough market as rivals Mercedes and Audi are preparing their own versions, with the new GLKand Q3 models.

With the introduction of the new X6 crossover and now this X1, the door is left open for even more ‘X’ variants including the possibility of an X4 crossover based on the X3 and an X7 SUV flagship complete with an air suspension system and V12 power.
