Spy Shots: 2010 BMW X1 SUV

The next couple of years will be very busy for BMW as it launches a handful of new models including new versions of current top sellers and some models we’ve never seen before. The new X1, revealed in these latest spy shots, falls into the latter category, taking the carmaker into the compact SUV market currently dominated by the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

This latest set of spy shots are the most revealing yet of the upcoming X1 - the latest prototype shedding the heavy camo gear seen on previous test cars in favor or a more revealing skintight covering. The car’s running gear is based on the 1-series compact car but its ride height will be taller and BMW’s X-drive AWD system will also feature.
Engine options will range from a 145hp 1.8L four-cylinder petrol engine to a range topping 3L diesel. Transmissions will include a conventional six-speed manual as well an optional six-speed self shifter. Expect to see elements from the CS concept car make it onto the new X1 including an enlarged grille, wrap around headlights and an aggressive bumper.
Production is expected to top the 100,000 mark and will start at a BMW plant in Leipzig by the middle of next year. The X1 will be priced higher than the 1-series, likely starting close to the $30,000 mark. Much of the car’s components will also be shared with the upcoming Mini SUV to save on development costs, although the BMW model is expected to be significantly larger than the Mini.

A ridiculous as it seems on face value, and I'll admit, from a BMW enthusiast point of view I felt the same way about the idea of an X1 as I do about MB's A and B-class vehicles - ie: unneccessary. But from a marketing point of view, expanding BMW's product portfolio and hence spreading market coverage will be to the company's benefit, especially in terms of attracting 'younger' (mid-to-late 20's) buyers to the BMW brand just as the 1er has done. There's a genuine interest in SUV's regardless of all this enviro-going-mentalism talk. Heck, if I had the money, I'd definitely pass up on the 1er and go for the X1.

Pure common sense had obviously led to the creation of the X1... but it's completely understandable why many of us (including myself) sometimes get a big iffy at the idea of an SAV which is smaller than the X3 (though the X3 will grow in size when the new one comes around in a few years)

We may think the X1 is 1 SAV too many...but it will lead to many potential young buyers X-ing over BMW.

Don't get cross (X) ...get 1

X3 appears to be the most boxy designed X car from these shots...
But then again, BMW is a true master of camo.....you really can't tell much of these fake body panels with all that black/white tape everwhere....

Re: BMW X1: CGIs, spy pics & info

BMW X1 Spied with the Door Open

After the recent X3 sighting, we now have some fresh photos of the smaller BMW X1 prototype, and this time photographers managed to get some shots of the interior.

Slotting above the MINI Crossman and below the X3, the X1will not be an SUV, but instead more of a crossover with lower ground clearance.

The X1 will serve as a cheaper entry point into the brand as well as a new X model in a new market segment.

Judging by the images, the interior looks cheap and certainly not up to BMW standards, but nevermind the flimsy looking door trim panel, as it's absolutely unfinished for prototype use. Naturally, the X1 will be available with a multitude of options, one being a glass panoramic roof as seen in one of the images.

Well suited to the American market, this particular prototype has an automatic transmission. We can also see the speedometer has larger miles per hour scale then smaller km/h scale on the inside.

We expect to see the X1 debut in Frankfurt 2009 and arriving in showrooms in 2010. To be built in BMWs Leipzig plant in Germany, the X1 is based on the 1 Series E87 platform and is expected to come in at around €32,000 in Germany.

Re: BMW X1: CGIs, spy pics & info

The good thing about these prototypes is that you are still seeing nothing too revealing , The interior for example is a mix-match of current components from various BMW models. Whilst the prototype is using the X1 platform architecture and original body design allbeit heavily disguised It is no closer to the real thing.

Which again from a good outlook none of the CGi illustrations have even come close to the final look. BMW will position the X1 as the "urban BMW SAV" in which the final model will be very proportion orientated as the Nissan Quashqai , When you see the final model or Concept you will see that the proportions will work with larger wheels and more purpose added body mouldings for added protection.

What is even more interesting is that BMW Have plans (depending on the success of the X1) to introduce a smaller X2 Sport activity Coupe - A smaller two door version - think the original XCoupe and then you begin to realise that the Xcoupe Concept has more purpose than everybody could imagine.

Which inturn would offer a various amount of use for the next 1er platform by offering (all ready confirmed) 2 Hatchback with different looks (The 3dr becomes less tall with a more a sporting look) , Coupe and Cabrio replacements , X1 SAV and Z2 Roadster.

Still on the table include X2 SAC , and replacing the idea of conventional Touring and sedan a Compact activity Sedan , And finally a smaller Z2 Shooting Brake and perhaps an additional Coupe .

Whats more ambitious is the idea to implement a standard stand alone BMW model based off the 1er but is only one model , either hybrid or electric , no additional body sizes , no additional engines or trims , A dynamic sporting vehicle either in a conventional or aerodynamic design , the epitome of BMW's "Efficient Dynamics" programme.
