You're right but in BMW's designations there is some logic in it: 1,3,5,6,7-series for sedans, coupe and cabrio and X etc. for SUV-like cars. The X-cars have become a separate range of cars.

For Mercedes it is more difficult since they are just using the alphabet.

Not true at all, most if not all of them have a meaning. CLK, SL, SLK etc.

SL = Sport Light
SLK = Sport Light Short
CLK = Coupe Light Short
SLR = Sport Light Racing
C = Compact

The only one I'm not sure what the meaning is CLS.

I really, really, really do see the point.
The more different BMWs, the better. It's not like quality or anything suffers. The X1 will be the best small SUV ever made, that is already a fact in my head.

X1, X3, X5, X6 and maybe X4.....totally amazing. A whole SUV BMW family! BRING IT ON!!!!!

I was expecting this kind of car. That's exactly what suits my needs!
3 Series Touring are since the first generation my day to day vehicle. X3 is slightly too large, so.... welcome X1 !!
