Volvo has made some good cars like the XC90 and the new C70 but the rest of the line is pretty average (when compared to the Germans). Making the new S40 so similar to Ford Focus was certainly a bad idea and the new S80 is getting very bad reviews. Also the S60 needs replacement ASAP cause it looks and is very dated.

This is just my opinion, but I think Volvo shouldn't be trying to compete with the 3 big Germans, because I think they don't stand a chance. However, if Volvo goes against car manufacturers such as VW and so, then they will be much better off.

Volvo's are bland, underwhelming, and half hearted efforts. That's coming straight from a Volvo owner. Don't get me wrong, they're great cars without a doubt, but for a driving enthusiast it's no where near much of anywhere anything this driver type is looking for. For me this fits the bill well because I'm still in school and it's a great first car, no doubt.

Re: Volvo is struggling under its own safety-glass ceiling.

The S60 R is a good car. My old Cobra ate two of them. I like Volvos and all, just not enough to actually buy one.

Anyho it's time for Volvo to stay off the beaten path of safety for good, as I would put any Audi/BMW/Merc against any Volvo any time, any place. They are indeed very safe but no more so than most other cars in this day and age, so that whole "safety, safety, and more safety" campaign could only keep them afloat for so long. They might want to commit to a more sporting image instead.

Re: Volvo is struggling under its own safety-glass ceiling.

I told you guys the exact thing a couple of months ago. Volvo being a leader in safety is now days nothing more than a myth. More over the S60R really isn't a good car, the Ford focus ST is even faster then it around the ring. The company needs someone with balls like Bangle and some engineers from Porsche or something. They need to start over, the whole saftey and family image isn't working anymore.
