Volkswagen dominates safest cars

Toyota may be the world's hottest car maker, but when it comes to the safety of the 2006 lineup, the Japanese juggernaut takes a back seat to Volkswagen.

In a study of more than 50 new vehicles conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, five out of 10 "Top Safety Pick" award winners came from the Wolfsburg, Germany-based automaker....

Re: Volkswagen dominates safest cars list.

Volkswagen AG, Audi top ratings

In new Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ratings, Volkswagen AG and its high-end Audi brand took five of the top 10 spots, and Ford Motor Co.'s twin cars, the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego, were the safest big car.

The ratings take into account performance on tests for frontal crashes, side crashes and whiplash.

Gold-status winners must earn good ratings for the insurance industry-backed institute's front and side crash tests, and on seat- and head-restraint protection. Silver awards go to cars with good performance in the front and side crash tests plus acceptable seat- and head-restraint ratings.

Other models honored are the midsize Saab 9-3, Subaru Legacy and Chevrolet Malibu with optional side air bags, and the Honda Civic among small cars.
