Der Flachbau - 07-01-2006, 03:31 PM

I stumbled on some interesting reading on this very rare car nicknamed Flachbau. Here's the site:

- ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

The site is small and quick read. However, here's a few snippets:

There were a total of 93 total cars in this general category including:

A. 76 Flatnose cars:
1) Japan model (10 cars) - These were all Polar silver metallic
and 2 of these cars have been confirmed wrecked

Attachment 310

2) Rest of World (ROW) Model (27 cars), with the following known
exterior color count:

Black - 1 car
Polar Silver Metallic - 4 cars
Unidentified - 22 cars

Attachment 311

3) U.S.A. model (39 cars).

Attachment 312

Exterior Color Count for USA:

Black - 17 cars
Guards Red - 10 cars
Black Metallic -3 cars
Grand Prix White - 2 cars
Metallic Paint to Sample - 2 cars
Midnight Blue Metallic - 2 cars
Polar Silver Metallic - 1 car
Speed Yellow - 1 car
Unidentified - 1 car

B. 17 non Flatnose "Package" version cars:

Attachment 313

Package Exterior Color Count

Black - 9 cars
Grand Prix White - 2 cars
Metallic Paint to Sample - 2 cars
Guards Red - 1 car
Midnight Blue Metallic - 1 car
Polar Silver Metallic - 1 car
Speed Yellow- 1 car

The Package model for "U.S.A. only" was reminiscent of the Turbo 3.3 S of
1992. With only 17 cars built, it is one of the rarest Porsches ever
(81 Turbo 3.3 S were built).

Re: Der Flachbau - 07-01-2006, 03:40 PM

What got me interested in reading about the Flachbau was the fact that a Rennlist member had posted pictures of his garage in a few threads. His garage includes:

'94 Pearl White Flatnose
'94 Guard Red Flatnose
'89 Guard Red Turbo Cab
'97 Arena Red Turbo S
'01 Seal Grey 996 Turbo

Here's a sample of cars:

Attachment 315

Attachment 316

And here's the three S - cars:

Attachment 321
Attachment 319
Attachment 320

Needless to say, that's the kind of garage I'd like to have, with the exception that I'd swop the 996 to my own car.

Edit: The reason for posting copies of the pics here rather than giving the link is that you need to be signed on to Rennlist in order to see the pics.

Donau,
Thanks for the info on der Flachbau. The yellow non-flatnose one (can't be called a Flachbau) was for sale last year, but by the time I'd called it was sold. A guy here in town owns the flachbau Porsche showed at the Chicago Auto show back then. The car was on the cover of Excellence a few years ago. Danny Sullivan did a comapro of the 94 turbo S flachbau with the 993 tt S, the 996 t, and the 959. Doug owns the 959 in the story too. This is from a yearly car show we have.

Thanks drronh! The pictures you attached are great and I also read the Excellence article you referred to. If I am not mistaken, the Guards Red Flachbau in the pictures you attached is the same one as the Guards red in my second post above. From the discussion on Rennlist I gathered that the new owner (in St Louis) bought it from someone in Naples Florida and had it delivered only about a week ago. Did your friend just sell his car?

Wow, I'm sorry you just missed on that speed yellow "Package" car. I can only imagine how it would feel to own a special car like that, one of only 17, and THE only speed yellow one at that!! But I can tell that you are dead serious about getting one of these rare ones, maybe this guy will flip flop on the 959 again?!

Re: Der Flachbau - 07-04-2006, 10:22 AM

Yes he did just sell it last week. I had my 94 in at the dealer because the rear wiper arm cracked in half and they got me a new one. The flachbau was there and the dealer was excited to have both cars at the same time. I asked what it was in for and they said they were doing some small stuff because he found a buyer and they had taken his plates off it and were waiting for a shipper to pick it up. I know he had a little over 15K miles on it. There are some stone chips on the nose and the wheels could use some refinishing.
BTW, not much interest in my 94, one guy seemed pretty serious, wanted to send me a deposit, then said he was leaving the country for a couple of weeks, didn't want me to drop the car off for a PPI like he set up. Maybe I'll just keep the car.

Thanks for sharing the pictures! Both cars are gorgeous and I realize that storage space may become an issue at some point but if you decide to keep the 3.6 964 Turbo, that would make perfect sense even without the storage space. The car is so rare even at total of 466 units built for the US that in time this car will positively be an extremely sought after collectors car. In fact I believe it already is. But I understand your dilemma with the storage space: after all, which one of the rare cars would one want to part with? Not the 916 with only 11 built, 914/6 you use for racing, Gallardo is too beautiful, 993TT too much fun and so is the 930 and I'm sure the GT3 as well....Oh well...I'm sure there is a solution to finding space for the new 997 GT3RS which will positively be a treasure to keep for good. And I for one am looking forward to hearing your impressions of this car when you get it and seeing some pics of it too.

How many 997 GT3 RS cars are they producing in total?

I read in the Marc Bongers "Porsche and RUF-Sportscars" that they only made 200 of the 996 GT3 RS cars. If the production of the 997 GT3RS is in the same ballpark, you are pretty close to the Flachbau production numbers from a numbers point of view. Of course in relative terms there aren't many that are more rare than the Flachbaus: the only ones that come to mind right now are your 916 (11), the "Package cars" (17), and the 993 GT2 (21). (I'm not taking any of the racers into consideration). Even the 959 (292 according to Bongers) numbers can't compete with those numbers.

I noticed that the VIN of your car ended in 277. That means that there were only another 11 cars built in 1993 (for MY 94) for the US after your car. Of course there were still cars built in 1994 as well.
I like the nice (almost) full Bay Intercooler. One can also tell from the engine that it has not been sitting and rusting which is a great thing. It has been driven which is extremely important.

While there are no commitments to sell the car to anyone yet, there is still time reconsider and keep the treasure for yourself

I've been away for a couple of days, and just got back. I understand that there were quite a few 996 GT3 RS built. I think I saw that in Excellence. Before that I too thought there were only 200. I have been told that 650 (or maybe 850- I can't remember) 997 GT3 RS were being made for the US, more for the ROW.

Thanks! Well, even 850 for the US and another similar amount for ROW is still pretty low numbers in relation to their current production numbers for the other models. It should be special.

Marc Bongers has a new book out (available July 6) called "Porsche Data Book : The definitive reference to specifications and statistics ". I had pre-ordered it from Amazon and expect to receive it by the end of next week.
It will be interesting to see if his numbers in the new book will match the ones in the book I referred to above.

I have noticed that occasionally numbers published in one publication do not match numbers in another. For example the prod numbers given for 1989 (my car - that's why I was checking) 930 in "Excellence was expected" was a different number from the one in Peter Morgan's "Original Porsche 911".

Wow! I have never been a fan of the flat nose P-cars, deeming them too Miami Vice. However, the 1994 Turbo S version is quite nice and appears to be a precursor to the 993s. Thanks for sharing.
