Nobody's ready to travel any more without a dozen of airbags, 15cms thick soft-plastic dashboard, automatic-everything you can think of and a 15-stars rating in crashtest... because of that, bigger motor, meaning bigger brakes and clutch, stronger suspensions, meaning more weight, etc...
But I agree with you. So much weight... It's incredible. This is one of the area where the carmakers have a lot to improve.
