  | Sluggish sales could spell end of VW Routan  By Andrew Ganz 04/20/2009, 9:41 AM Despite prominent, if controversial, advertising featuring actress Brooke Shields as a spokeswoman, Volkswagen’s Routan minivan has hardly been a sales success. Just 5,582 2009 Routans have found buyers since the start of production last fall and more than 16,000 sit unsold on VW lots across North America despite the fact that no Routan has been built since last year. “We launched Routan at the worst moment,” VW of America CEO Stefan Jacoby told Automotive News, referring to the van’s launch last fall as auto sales tumbled across North America. | Read this the other day, no surprise here. It isn't a real VW and VW should have installed their own engines and transmisson to give it less of a re-badge/interior job. Or they shoud have just built that mini-bus concept from a few years ago, that would have been a hit. M

| ^^^^ Totally agree. No surprise... It's not a real VW. The mini bus would have broken all the records.

| Was never goign to sell well. The only way to save it is make it from scratch instead of just re-badging it and make it a proper VW..

| They should just give up then, well i suppose they have the brand image but other companies have been making people carries for longer so people know about them.

| Thats true, I bet the question was in all the board meetings "do we invest in a totally new product or do we outsource one"? I still think that concept would have been a hit. Sometimes a new, fresh product can enliven a shrinking market, and even if the market is shrinking you can still gain market share/sales while other shrink/die/drop out of the market. Ford and GM have given up on minivans all together. Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Nissan are the only ones left. Hyundai and Kia are quiting after this year. M
