Motor Trend - First Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

First, about that name: Tiguan is a blend of the German words for "tiger" and "iguana." Blame it on a contest involving a German automotive magazine's readers. (Who said Germans don't have a sense of, uh, humor?) Though the rationale behind melding two animals into one nameplate escapes us (anything both furry and scaly is kind of creepy), the Tiguan is so appealing that its quirky name shouldn't deter shoppers in the explosive compact SUV market from taking a close look at the full-size Touareg's little brother.

Is it just me or are VWs looking more and more like Asian vehicles?
Great review though.

Also newly standard is 3-year/36,000 free scheduled maintenance, which should help counter buyer skepticism about VW's quality.
Is this still a really big issue for VW in the US?

More than skepticism about quality, I think it is perception (and probably the truth) that VWs (and German cars in general) are more expensive to maintain and fix than the Japanese counterparts.

Oh yes, and dealer service is still lousy according to most VW owners I know. VW has some serious problems in the U.S. because they still don't take the U.S. market seriously IMO.

Re: Motor Trend - First Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

IMO Tiguan is too small for US standards even when compared to the Japanese competition namely the RAV4 , CRV and Rogue.

Only young couples without childred might find the interior space adequate.

It's just you!

He he. No I agree. They certainly are. This looks like a Hyundai. And i'ts soooo boring, I fell asleep before I even got to the article. The GLK kills it.

I sometimes think VW is held back for the sake of Audi.

Re: Motor Trend - First Drive: 2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

VW has always been a very conservative brand. Furthermore Audi gets the best designers , the best engineers.......the best of everything and most of the times that leaves VW with mediocre products.

Aren't they more or less identical in terms of size?

Τiguan is on the lower part of the segmnent in terms of size. The width and height especially are among the smaller , that makes the interior a bit crowded.
