They might be used interchangeably. "R-tires" may be a shortened version for an informal term popular among roadracers and autocrossers, "DOT-R tire" (race-compound tires, generally with treadwear 40-80, approved by US Dept of Transportation for use on the street). Some might differentiate "R-tire" to specifically mean a street-legal soft-compound
semi-slick (like a P Zero Corsa), while an R-compound tire with more conventional tread pattern (like P Zero the Hero) might not be considered an "R-tire." But for the most part, they're pretty much the same. Meaning they're much grippier than standard high performance summer tires, when warmed up.
