What is wrong with my car? - 09-09-2006, 01:04 PM

Okey guys. I would like to have some help from you experienced ones.
About 3 weeks ago, when I started my engine, this happened:

- ONLY REGISTERED AND ACTIVATED USERS CAN SEE ALL LINKS - CLICK HERE TO REGISTER

This only happens when you have the ignition or the engine on. The date and the clock resets to 1.1.1998 and 00.00. Not only what you see on the film, but also the AC and the radio light is blinking. And pretty much every red light in the car too. It's like that for about 5-8 minutes, and then it stops. But then for example the temp is not shown, or the fuel measurer is on zero.

I went to Audi the other day to let them have a quick look, and they said it was the battery. Then I said, how on earth can it be the battery, when everything else on the car is working fine. THey said I should load the battery and then if that should work, I should come in for a error-search at Audi, and only that would cost me 1500 swedish crowns, which is for me expensive!

I was charging my battery the whle day yesterday. Then when I started the engine today, everything worked fine.... until after I stopped at a gas-station, it all returned again.

So now to my question. What do you think is wrong? Can I somehow fix it myself?

Apriciating any answers.

Solution: buy a BMW.

Go to a independant audi specialist for a much cheaper price than what audi would charge, if you can solve the problem using audi forums. Best of luck

More than likely an ECU issue... might just have to have it reset/ghosted. My 2000 S4 had similar issues with engine lights coming on, and other minimal things, didnt effect the drive, but still annoying.

Its certainly an electrical thing, could be bad battery connection or ECU. Thats pretty much it. Have them reset the computer and see if it still does it.... more than likely the problem will go away.

I have a similar issue with my volvo. I get a message that says that the DSTC (ESP) needs service or is temporarily off, while it works just fine. They reseted the electronics but nothing happend. (the message appears every two or three weeks and stays for an hour or two and then dissappears) I am waiting for a full reprogramming. (free of charge!)

Audiholic, i wish you good luck on this. I still haven't solved mine! I am 100% sure that it is an ECU problem and you should get some Audi treatment soon enough, before everything blows up

You mention charging your battery- did you have trouble starting it 3 weeks ago or have to charge it then? Because if you did and your battery is old and does not hold a charge this will happen. I go through this with my Lamborghini every few months. If that is the case and/or your battery is more than a year old you should try replacing it first before doing anything to any control units.

Replace your battery, or at least have a new one hooked up to it so you can test it out. This does indeed happen to cars with bad batteries.
