One of the hardest decisions when picking a new car is choosing the right color but the day when cars will be available in multiple colors could be here sooner than you think. Scientists have developed a new coating called ‘paramagnetic’ paint that has the ability to change colors at the touch of a button. One carmaker looking into the technology is Nissan, which has already developed a self-healing paint.

Before the vehicle is painted, a special polymer containing the special ‘paramagnetic’ iron oxide particles is applied to the car’s body. An applied electric current then adjusts the spacing of small crystals within the iron oxide particles and therefore affects their ability to reflect light and change color.
The process is perfect for metal objects like cars because a continuous small current is needed to maintain the desired color. When the vehicle is switched off, the car returns to a default color of white.
The coating has the ability to reproduce any color visible to the human eye and it takes less than a second to change the entire car. The first commercial applications could be on the market as early as 2010

Perfect for robbers. Rob the bank using a attention whore red colour and shortly after the robbery you change it to silver with the press of a button. While the cops are busy eyeballing for a red car, your silver one will go unnoticed like Steven Segals latest movie.

Reminds me of the movie "Taxi", in which they do exactly that... robbing banks in a red Mercedes, and then painting it silver inside a truck-trailer to get away unnoticed

BTW, imagine yourself boasting to your friends about your Interlagos Blue M5, while it is standing in the parking lot, completely white :-)

I highly doubt this will be available. But, whenever this becomes available I can bet that the Japanese will offer this at no cost or at the most for $1k extra option, but somehow the Germans will justify this and charge $5k extra.

Well my meaning is that the Germans will way overcharge for the same thing that Japanese charge.

They can charge whatever the f they want, i ain't gonna buy it! Excuse me, but that reminds me on my Matchbox "Hot Wheels" Edition cars when i was 10yo or so; in the cold water it's blue and in warm it's red... No, thanks! Idiots!

Imagine walking out of a shopping mall and trying to find your car... errr.... interesting. So does this mean that if you want to change from a standard paint colour to a metallic-finish colour you have to pay $500 each time you make that colour change ?

I guess such an idea would be great to have at the local car dealer so you can visually test out which colour works best on the car you're about to purchase. Better than those car configurators they currently have online which do not provide an accurate representation of most colours.

Can you imagine how many stupid women will have their cars coloured hot pink.... oh dear....
