We've gone back and forth between Pitt and Morgantown a few times and even with it floored most of the way ~90mph we averaged a tick under 40mpg. Now if you are frugal with the pedal you can easily achieve 50mpg in the Smart.
Edit: But it is about time for Smart to get a new engine and a transmission that can shift a bit faster.

Oh yes...they'd better get a new engine/trans combo because this Toyota IQ is clearly superior in those areas. Now that it is a hit here in the U.S. and seemingly around the world, maybe now they'll invest the money needed to do this.

We're the only SMART dealer in Tennessee and we've got a wait of about 12-18 months. I don't get it. Although we are seeing about a 30% back out rate. They better have something ready for the future. They will quickly saturate the market start producing 50k cars a year. And you can't survive long term with the number of units they are selling now. At those margines you would need to crank out about 200 units a month to sustain a stand alone franchise. And that aint gonna happen when every other auto maker gets in this segment.

The drive train stinks. It's a joke. This car should cost about $14k loaded with that crappy tranny and engine.
