Autocar - Mercedes SLR McLaren Stirling Moss

What is it?

This is the Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss, created as a parting gesture in the road car collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. It costs a breathtaking £660,000. And for that vast amount of cash you don’t even get a windscreen or a roof.

Such luxuries have been deleted in a programme that has pared 200kg off the Merecedes SLR’s kerb weight, bringing it down to 1551kg. The basis is the standard SLR roadster’s carbonfibre monocoque. It has been further developed with beefed-up sills which, together with an extra crossmember behind the seats, make the Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss one of the most structurally rigid open-top cars ever.

Those sills make climbing in rather tricky, but once you’re there, the view is like nothing else, with a long bonnet sweep that plunges away out front.

The two-seat cabin has been pared back to essential basics, all trimmed in a mix of carbonfibre and leather. Should you expect more for £660k? Possibly, but I doubt potential owners will complain.

The Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss receives the same engine as the SLR 722, with 641bhp and 604lb ft. It endows the car with truly colossal performance; Mercedes claims 0-62mph in just 3.5sec.

If this car doesn't bring an entire street to a stand still then I don't know what does. I would love to toy around in it in London for one day..........but only on a day when it's 200% certain that rain won't come down from heaven.

hahahaha......the pics are funny with the eye protection goggles. As I've mentioned when this car was introduced, there is actually quite a bit of DANGER driving this car on everyday roads/highways. With no windshield, rocks and debris could end up in your face if you don't have a helmut/goggles.

Just get a SLR 722 Roadster and be done with it......you can enjoy top down driving at insane speeds without worrying about your head being smacked.

No danger at all. Only wind, and possibly mosquitos, are likely to "threaten" your head. Unless you closely follow a big truck full of stones of course.

Do you think every biker is used to be hit by stones when driving? All of them don't have an full-size helmet, yet they aren't hit by stones in a regular basis.

And Fangio in his open-top, no windshield Silberpfeil, travelling at huge speeds with no aerodynamic study involved in his car, did not fight flying stones either.

Spectacular car this is!!!

Googles are there against mosquitos, and air pressure on the eyes. They aren't big-stone protective helmets.

My favorite part about this concept is the front!

If the SLR was still in production it should have received a nose job this great.

Ugly?
That thing is a work of art.

Yep, the SLR should have looked like this from the get go, just with a top on it.
