I’m a little confused here. What’s the difference between the 300 SLR and the 300 SL Gullwing?
I did a little research, but I’m still not sure though. From what I read, the 300 SLR was built as a racecar. Because of the success of it in races, the 1954 300 SL Gullwing was born, which became the first SL-Class model.
Now, wasn't the current SLR based on the current SL? The doors are the only similarities I see between the Gullwing and the current SLR.
Found some pictures of the 300 SLR and the Gullwing.

I saw it at the '04 NY Auto Show. It was the 50th anniversary of the SL. There was a black SLR sitting next to it, it was like going back in time.
