The only "presence" the [new] SLR has, is it's size when compared to the old 300SL.

As far as character and TRUE style is concerned - well......need I even say it........

I'm sorry, but I disagree, the 300 SL was the greatest.

I agree, as much as I love the SLR the 300SL just out does it somehow. It has to be one of the greatest cars ever made.

They look so weird side by side at first. But after you look at it for awhile, it is a great sight.

I’m a little confused here. What’s the difference between the 300 SLR and the 300 SL Gullwing?

I did a little research, but I’m still not sure though. From what I read, the 300 SLR was built as a racecar. Because of the success of it in races, the 1954 300 SL Gullwing was born, which became the first SL-Class model.

Now, wasn't the current SLR based on the current SL? The doors are the only similarities I see between the Gullwing and the current SLR.

Found some pictures of the 300 SLR and the Gullwing.

I saw it at the '04 NY Auto Show. It was the 50th anniversary of the SL. There was a black SLR sitting next to it, it was like going back in time.

You are correct Yaz, the SLR was a race car. It also looks more agressive than the standard 300SL

Thanks Robert, I honestly thought the current SLR is the only MB with that name till now. I've always thought it was the Gullwing that won all those races

I love the 300SL Gullwing or Flügeltürer, but I've always thought the [totally overshadowed] roadster was equally beautiful.

Read my previous post:

Quote:
The Gullwing is the nick of the 300 SL, not SLR.
After succes in motorsport with the 300 SL, MB needed a replacement, thus the 300 SLR, meanwhile M. Hoffmann convinced MB to make a street legal SL witch is the Gullwing we all know and love.
Also the curent SLR isn't really reminescent of the 300 SLR. Heck you can find more design cues between the Z4 Coupe and 300 SLR than between the actuall SLR and the true one.
Also the actuall SLR is really more of a GT, while the 300 SLR was a toroughbred sport car, created for the sole purpose of deafeating Ferrari and Jaguar.
Also, the 300 SL was based on the 300 S, while 300 SLR on the W 196 Formula 1 car. they also had diferent engines. Inline 6 for the SL and Inline 8 for SLR.
So we have 300 SL W194 race car, the 300 SL W198 Street Legal AKA Gullwing and the 300 SLR sport car, replacement of the W194 300 SL in motor sport.
