I think the SLR probably was a great initial concept - but thanks to several long, boring, board meetings with a bunch of old guys who wanted space for their golf clubs, any dreams that Mercedes would produce the world's greatest supercar were soon destroyed - the SLR appears to have been hindered by people who don't fully understand the concept of a supercar. | Well, where do I start Robert?
One thing I’ve learned from being on this forum (and the old forums) is that I can never convince another car fan to love my favorite car brand. We all have different tastes in cars and I respect that.
Anyway, the SLR is a supercar to me. Ignore the fact that it has airbags, AC, CD changer, and what not.
The car is made of carbon fiber, the monstrous power under the hood, the way it gains and loses speed, the ceramic brakes, the wing, and the location of the engine. You don’t see every regular car with such specs. That tells me it’s a supercar. You might not like the design or the performance, but hey, I believe it’s a different kind of supercar, maybe a new segment J. We all know MB sucks at making manual transmissions. That’s probably why they went a head with the automatic. But it’s usually close to its competitor’s performance. It’s not like it’s always way behind. It does that while it’s more luxurious and safer. What else can you ask for?
Oh well, that’s all I gotta say for now. | | | | | Contributor

I've seen a Mars Red (read: bright) S500 before so I'm sure a White SLR is not a problem. Those colors on that lists are probably exclusive to the SLR like some color are exclusive to the Maybachs, but with the right money you can have any color you want from any of the Benz products I'm sure.

lol, ive also seen a bright red S-class, like an A-class colour on it, we had an E-class a few years ago and we found a colour not on the E-class colour chart and asked if we could have it and they said no problem...!! i suppose if in every brochure they listed / painted every colour then people would get confused lol | | | | | Devotee

Oh well, that’s all I gotta say for now. | A bit late to this but I guess I might as well give my opinion. It's already been said before that the SLR has too many compromises. If you look at the current roster of "supercars" you'll find that they all have function over form. Every last one of them are cars for the pros... look at this list. Enzo, CGT, CCR, McLaren F1, Maserati MC12, Zonda, Ford GT. These are all cars that will kill you if you don't know how to drive them properly. Most of them don't have the luxury that the SLR has. None of them use automatic gearboxes.
Obviously, the looks are subjective, but you can't help but think that McLaren and Benz could have done so much more to the SLR. They had all the resources and talent to challenge those cars. They should have gone with the philosphy that those cars were created.
Instead, what you have is a GT a la Bentley GT and SL that is the most powerful of its kind. You can say that Benz did a survey and blah blah blah, people want boot space and what not. All they could have done is an SL or CL on steroids. Benz shouldn't have built another GT, they should have built a true supercar. | | | | | Contributor
