There's a lot of negative sentiment toward the SLR all over the show. I think the car is underrated. In this segment the SLR displays one characteristic that none of the current crop of supercars can lay claim to being.
The SLR is classic, long nosed, cab-backward drop-dead gorgeous. It is a beautiful piece of automotive artwork. It evokes all of the right forms of emotive appreciation: smooth, flowing lines; beautifully curved surfaces; sharp, purposeful detailing.
Objectively, anyone with a purist's appreciation for car design will admit that whilst they're all dramatic looking from a
technical perspective none of these cars are classically beautiful, i.e. something that even a woman would appreciate:
1. Enzo - space-age, faceted and very business like, its pod like cockpit perched atop a flat wedge still makes it the ugliest of the supercars.
2. Carrera GT - Function over form, the GT isn't unattractive but its no beauty contest winner either. As superlative it may be it still looks like a pick-up truck in profile especially with its hard-top in place.
3. Zonda - a favourite of mine for a great many reasons, primarily because it's so exotic and exudes the passion of its creator. Again, however, the Zonda is not classically beautiful, a fact not helped by some particularly fussy (I'd prefer to call it distinctive being a fan) detailing and a massively cab-forward design.
For the record I don't think much of the Veyron's looks either despite its monumental presence and ability.
So, if you're wealthy and you're looking for a supercar that's a fine performer, is practical to use and wrenches your heart out with exquisite looks every time you open up the garage, the SLR is the default choice. It's just so achingly beautiful:
