The SLR is alread much lighter than the SL65, but it needs to be even lighter to approach the handling of the Enzo and CGT. Also the automatic is a turn off to many sports car enthusiasts who see a manual as the ONLY proper transmission for a car.
I agree but this doesn`t seem to affect the sales of the SLR!

There's a lot of negative sentiment toward the SLR all over the show. I think the car is underrated. In this segment the SLR displays one characteristic that none of the current crop of supercars can lay claim to being.

The SLR is classic, long nosed, cab-backward drop-dead gorgeous. It is a beautiful piece of automotive artwork. It evokes all of the right forms of emotive appreciation: smooth, flowing lines; beautifully curved surfaces; sharp, purposeful detailing.

Objectively, anyone with a purist's appreciation for car design will admit that whilst they're all dramatic looking from a technical perspective none of these cars are classically beautiful, i.e. something that even a woman would appreciate:

1. Enzo - space-age, faceted and very business like, its pod like cockpit perched atop a flat wedge still makes it the ugliest of the supercars.
2. Carrera GT - Function over form, the GT isn't unattractive but its no beauty contest winner either. As superlative it may be it still looks like a pick-up truck in profile especially with its hard-top in place.
3. Zonda - a favourite of mine for a great many reasons, primarily because it's so exotic and exudes the passion of its creator. Again, however, the Zonda is not classically beautiful, a fact not helped by some particularly fussy (I'd prefer to call it distinctive being a fan) detailing and a massively cab-forward design.

For the record I don't think much of the Veyron's looks either despite its monumental presence and ability.

So, if you're wealthy and you're looking for a supercar that's a fine performer, is practical to use and wrenches your heart out with exquisite looks every time you open up the garage, the SLR is the default choice. It's just so achingly beautiful:

A lot of people including myself think that the Carrera GT is one of the best looking supercars ever. The only Zonda that could potentially compete for aesthetics in my book would be the F.

There's nothing wrong with that sentiment Carbon, I personally love the way a CGT looks but not for reasons of aesthetic beauty. If I cast a critical eye over the looks of the CGT, however, I can't help but feel that this angle is the car's worst:

There's something about the lines of this car that simply doesn't flow wouldn't you agree?

Still adore it though and it'd be my first choice to own as well...

I kind of have to agree with you about the design of the car.
The CGT, Enzo, Zonda are all very good looking exotic cars.
But it's not so very classical. It still would look good after a few decades but not as special as some oldtimers like for example the 300SL gullwing or a Jaguar E-type. And the SLR does feature alot of classical design and I think that it will still look special when you look at it after 30 years when you open your garage door....if you own one.
For example the Ferrari F40, Lamborghini Countach or the Bugatti EB110 are all stunning looking and great cars but whenever I see them I still think they look like 'toy' cars rather than a real classic. They don't age so well but that's just my opinion though.
But anyway, they all are a classic in their own way, some less on looks and some more on technical specs and performance.

I really agree with you Carbon, but I would also say the McLaren F1 would have to be one of my absolute favourites too.
