I don't think so, P400 and P500 modes are much more of a gimmick than any of the launch modes.

How is it a gimmick if it makes the car more economical?

How does it make it more economical if it only restricts the throttle bodies to open 90%. That means the only gas savings you would get is if you mashed the pedal to the floor constantly and if thats the case your not concerned with mileage, but you probably would also want the full furry of what the engine has to offer as well.

Totally pointless imo.

whatever the case is, many M5 owners dislike the launch control.

i found it on m5board in the articles section actually. At max throttle at 400 mode, the throttle only opens 90 percent. However I'm curious if this is only at max throttle

P400 and P500 mode

Frequently, the driver does not require the M5’s full power output and maximum agility, for example in town traffic. For this reason, when the car is started, the markedly comfortable P400 power mode with 400 HP is automatically activated. However, simply by pressing the Power button situated on the selector lever cover, the driver has at his disposal the full power of ten cylinders. This converts the accelerator pedal kinematics to a spontaneous characteristic, the P500 mode facilitating sporty driving pleasure and the P500 sports mode providing the driver with an uncompromising motor sport experience.

Re: SL63 AMG & MCT 7 speed details by autocar

I believe the P400 mode changes the ECU mapping, not just limit the throttle to 90% though that might also be part of the P400 map.

Anyway, back to topic, at last an AMG with out an automatic, screw the headlights, it is already my favorite AMG.

AMS did test the M5's acceleration in S6-mode and Lauch Control, here's the result:

Launch Control / P500 Sport, S6-mode:
0-100 km/h: 4,7 s / 4,8 s
0-160 km/h: 9,4 s / 9,8 s
0-200 km/h: 13,9 s / 14,4 s

...that's really not a big difference, but LC is still a good gadget IMO
