The facelift is indeed a letdown for a car of this stature.
However, that said, the rest of the car is fortunately delightful and gorgeous enough to support the facelift until the next rendition comes along. An important advantage of this facelift, however, is its rather immediate recognition factor, which is typically good from a marketing standpoint.
Now, I'm impatient for the next SL. I'll bet others are, too.
TagMan | I see where you're coming from Tagman but I have to disagree. As the days go by this SL facelift looks better and better - it's fresh and modern and will surely generate some much needed re-interest in the SL. A fine effort in my book... | | | | | Advocate

Has anyone noticed those two opennings in the front bumper next to the fog lights. They must be washers like those for the front lights, beacuse there is one on each side. And the opening for the tow hook is much higher. Nice one MB, that's got to be the first amog the competition.
AMG is just yaw opening. I liked the design from the first day I saw it undisguised - just amazing what they pulled off with this facelift. | | | | | Fanatic

Had seen those openings, but...they only are here in the AMG package! Strange...Not sure that it is washers, even if i see no other explanation... | | | | | Contributor

Tagman, my friend you'll see that we go through this each and every time a new or facelifted Benz is presented. The same ones that hate it almost always come around once the car is shown in more than press shots, in real life and roadtest photos. Some of the very same ones here that hated it have already started to "come around" to the facelift. Watch and see. Same thing happened with the S, CL, facelifted E, and so on...now most think they're just fine looking.
Good to see you here as always. | | | | | Junior Member

Good to see you here as always. | OK, sure... many new car designs and mid-cycle changes that seem odd at first end up being appreciated more over time. I absolutely agree with that. The Bangled-look comes to mind as a huge example. I have no doubt that I will warm up to the SL's freshened look , but I would much rather have been impressed and excited immediately out of the gate. Love at first sight says a lot, and other than the AMG variant which is clearly a winner, I must be honest and say my first impression was not "WOW"!
Thanks for the reply. :-)

TagMan | Well to be honest of course, my first reaction wasn't a wow either. I was like "what the hell". That is because you see the SL is Mercedes' most coveted model and we're used to it staying the same for anywhere between 13-17 years. The previous R129 SL ran from 1990-2002 and that car also had 2 facelifts, but they were much more sublte. Things have changed so MB can't do that with the R230 and expect it to remain the segment leader. I think this FL will blow you away when you see it in person.
