And, just a random question: what was the difference between the 170 and 220's with this body style? There's a '220' on Wikipedia that looks exactly the same (I thought it was a 170 when I saw it):

Is it just the headlights? Or is it a different body entirely?

Don't worry about the Karma thingy.

The 170 and 220 are vastly different. The 170 was basically your run-of-the-mill Mercedes aimed at a broad market. The 170S/Sb and 170SD versions were glitzy versions of the extremely spartan 170 models (both petrol and diesel).

The 220 used the same body shell as the 170 but had fender integrated headlights and a new engine, a 2.2-l 6-cylinder with about 80-horsepower (a typical 170 had somewhere between 45-50-hp). It was aimed at a higher positioned clientele and was also available as a convertible (see your pic). The 170 was also available as a convertible as you probably know.

Will send you the pics ASAP. My Internet is slow today...

Ah, I see. The great mystery is solved

Did the 220 use entirely different mechanicals?

Same mechanicals throughout, basically, as far as I know. Obviously the biggest mechanical difference was the engine of the 220. Both still used drum-brakes as far as I can tell.

It's good to meet someone who appreciates these older Mercedes', especially the 170 and 220 models. Most modern-day "Mercedes fans" just seem to care about AMGs and the powerful V6 and V8, V12 stuff...

My father drove a 170D - as a chauffeur for the local brewmaster in the early 1960s.

Re: ***Leonberg Classic Car Show (Part 1)***

Well, dad and two other friends of his, had bought a 50 something MB 170 when they were in university but sold it when they finished, as they couldn't afford a car at that time. This car had taken part in the Acropolis rally before they bought it, and now is owned by a collector!

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's the Jeremy Clarkson syndrome

Honestly, I'd take an original Simplex over a Black Series or even an SLR. There's just something pure about these old cars that's wonderful.

Re: ***Leonberg Classic Car Show (Part 1)***

You're gonna turn more heads with the Simplex than an SLR or Black Series!

The Simplex was very powerful for its period. I believe it had a 60- or 80-hp engine, which was extremely powerful for its time period.
