Performance and efficiency at the next level: The BMW X5 Performance Diesel

Performance and Efficiency at the next level :
The BMW X5 Performance Diesel.

The BMW X5-M has launched internationally before the World Premiere at the Shanghai motor show in a weeks time to both positive and negative feedback whether there is debate regarding it's intentions and does the X5 M fit within the M philosophy?

Or simply now is it a "New World Order" Although no stranger to controversy in it's previous incarnation BMW always shied away from a fettled E53 from the fabled M Division? Back then the X5 M was not even a consideration until the creation of a very special X5 titled the Le Mans. This X5 was Special because of the V12 engine it carried squeezed into the engine bay with a stripped out interior , although shown as a Concept to showcase BMW and it's successful run in competition , many were surprised when BMW admitted it was a fully working prototype as proved by Hans J Stuck , The question was will they or wont they fit the V8 as used in the M5 and Z8 to the X5?

Unfortunately the M5 V8 was sparingly shared between the M5 and the Z8 and production was at full capacity for these vehicles. Prototypes were constructed by the M Division just as there was with the E39 M5 Touring model although tempting the car never got the green light.
BMW counteracted the demand for a more powerful X5 which would not tresspass on the reputation of the M division with a BMW X5 4.8iS , additional power and more grunt were complemented by additional aero package with spoilers for the front and rear bumpers , 19" Wheels and larger pronounced exhaust ports.

The BMW X5 4.8iS was a very popular choice especially in the US and other key markets such as the UK and continental Europe.
The BMW X5 was replaced in August 2006 with the latest larger model under the guise of the E70 again a model that in it's first generation became successful overnight even there were some parties that said the X5 project would be costly for BMW in reputation and sales , which turned out to be unfounded.
The BMW X5 M takes it's place as the Top line model of the BMW X5 utilisng the first segments of a new chapter for the M Division - Twin Turbo charged V8 with automatic transmission, It is true this is a car aiming for profitable markets were performance Activity Vehicles are very popular amongst consumers.
Specifically X5 M is intentionally for these markets but in Europe were the highest selling BMW X5 vehicles are equipped with the two diesel variants on offer BMW are seeing to that the European market is not left out with a performance diesel to accompany the BMW X5 M although not badged as an M model but only in special M Sport aeropacket , The new Performance Diesel currently in development with X5 prototypes disguising key indentification areas with camouflage can be seen at the Ring which will give the greatest indication that BMW are aiming this to be a very powerful car powered by a very powerful , yet efficient diesel engine.

This engine utilising a unique Tri-Turbo set up is based on the existing six cylinder and multi-award winning diesel , PS output will be at 354 PS Giving the X5 Performance Diesel great performance and like every BMW Diesel "Efficient Dynamics" technology will be incorporated including Start-Stop and Brake energy regeneration amongst others. For it's segment it will be a very individual choice and possibly more popular than the BMW X5 M in certain European markets.

The look of the car takes a less pronounced look of the widened wheel arches seen on the X5 M , Wheels that give a kinship to the old X5 4.8is before the facelift give the X5 a very sporting and powerful appearence.
Multispoke in a larger size will be available as optional equipment.
The aerodynamic packet follows the theme with the X5 M although the central intake is smaller with the intakes for the brakes less open mouthed with a coloured bar across . There are subtle spoilers for air flow at the leading edge of the bumper. The rear of the car features to larger are more exposed performance exhaust pipes which will be incorporated within an updated LCI version of the BMW X5.

Officially the engine will enter the X5 models first and then follow through to the X6. BMW will then introduce the engine within it's key models such as the next 5er , 7er and eventually the additional 5er and 6er variants.

Effectively the BMW X5 will also receive the Twin-Turbo V8 utilisng 407PS which will also be found on the next generation of 5er and 6er.
The title for the Performance Diesel of the X5 is still under discussion but there is debate for the XDrive iSD ,
The advent for thsi diesel begins to prepare enthusiasts in a nomenclature known as "SuperSports" in which Petrol engined BMW's will not just be offered to the customer but Diesel too.

Sounds great, but this will be an expensive option with 3 turbochargers. Will this model be offered in the U.S.?

Sounds fantastic. This is the eingine I will put if I were going to buy the next 5er. I wouldn´t expect the fuel consumption to be much more than the 35d engines.

But I have a few questions. What meant TDS in the past and if all these new performance diesels X5s will have as standard equipment the M pack.

I don't know what the S stood for.

I know that the difference between the 525 TD and the 525 TDS was that the TDS had an intercooler, making it around 30hp more powerful than the TD (around 145hp instead of 115) without the intercooler. Both had turbo of course.

The BMW block had lots of reliability problems though.

Back then, only three diesels could develop more than 110/115hp: the 525 TDS, the merc 300 TD, and the... Citroën CX Turbodiesel (who was the first really high-perf diesel, and was the fastest diesel available before the arrival of the TDS and 300TD)

Currectly yes. But they did offer a 4.4 V8 diesel in the E65 with 330 hp and 700 Nm (245 km/h, 6.6 sec. 0-100km/h, 2115 kg)
This new I6 3.0 tri-turbo will repace it, and add some horses
