2008 Saab Turbo X Launches, Driving School Included

BOSTON — Saab rolled out a turbocharged version of its new 9-3, the 2008 Turbo X, at the New England International Auto Show today, calling it "the ultimate performance expression" of the 9-3. For dramatic effect, it was posed alongside another turbocharged Saab product, the 900SPG from 1985, both in black.

The Turbo X is powered by an all-aluminum 24-valve 2.8-liter V6 that makes 280 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission. A notable feature of the Turbo X is Saab XWD, an active all-wheel-drive system, along with eLSD, an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential — which Saab says is the first use of the system in this segment.

A Saab spokesman tells Inside Line the automaker is giving tuition to a Turbo X Academy for the first 100 U.S. buyers of the new model. An adaptation of Saab's popular Aero Academy, it will be a two-day course geared to the Turbo X held at the Road Atlanta racetrack in Northeast Georgia. Dates will be announced later.

The Saab Turbo X will be out in the spring, with only 600 slated for the U.S., and only in metallic jet black. It will be available in Sport Sedan and five-door Sport Combi body styles. The Sport Sedan version starts at $42,510, and the Sport Combi starts at $43,310.

What this means to you: This spring, a driver's fancy will turn to thoughts of a brilliant black Saab turbo. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent

Still the only Saab I like, the 9-3 lineup.
