^ This desire for 'symbolism' (iconic styling elements) specifically for the purposes of evoking emotional links with history is not a typical hallmark of Modern German design, it is however very typical of a lot of North American design -- this is all I'm saying.
The symbolism of the Mercedes brand evolved over time, Sacco was in the process of distilling this symbolism to a point where it was starting to 'dematerialize' -- since the connection with Chrysler, we have seen those archetypal symbols of historical Mercedes design elements play a key role in the identity of the brand. The new Mercedes design is far more concerned with symbolism and expressive brand identity.
