All I can tell you is that stories about poeple who this and own that don't count when it comes to surveys. I have been though the very same thing with all types of Mercedes owners who say they've never had a problem, yet MBWorld is full of owners with problems. For your 30 to count they would have to been surveyed. BMW's quality problems have been well documented in this country especially upon the introduction of the current 7 and 5-Series.
That said, BMW has pretty much taken care of all that, but in this survey there is a criteria called "Overall Quality - Design", which means it looks at:

I can bet you that BMW fell down on this part with Idrive. This has also been documented in Consumer Reports surveys also.
