Regardless of it's performance, still this is a flagship, more than 2 tons of weight, big luxury sedan, the S... A 320CDI should be minimum... 4cyl and 2.2L is very low for this car. It's in conjunction with a HYBRID SYSTEM. And the details are still sketchy so we might not even know for sure that this car will be powered by a 4-cylinder CDI engine. MB is working on a 2.2-l 200-horsepower CDI engine to replaced the aging current '220 CDI motor found in cars like the C220 CDI and E220 CDI. This could be the engine in question.
No Mercedes S-Class has ever had a 4-cylinder engine: even the lowest models were always 6-cylinder powered. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to cawimmer430 For This Useful Post: | | | GCZ's High Court

A 200hp 4 cylinder in conjunction with a hybrid electric motor would be plausible. | | | | | GCZ's High Court

Remember, the first S320 CDI has a mere 197-horsepower and it was quite fast for its time and fuel efficient. 10 years later, a potential 2.2-l 300-hp S-Class should be capable of whooping it.
Either way, I am still sketchy about this. Seems kind of odd that a "4-cylinder" S-Class is in the works. I'll wait until I hear more about it.
Awhile ago, there was some article on Autolies about a a 4.5-l V8 C-Class with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Check out the bulls*** below.

Mercedes-Benz is reported to be developing a new version of its S-class limo equipped with an ultra-efficient Bluetec diesel engine. With a motor displacing just 2.2L, the new diesel driven S-class should return a fuel economy rating of just 6.6L per 100km, or roughly 35mpg.
We should get our first glimpse of the new car at September’s Frankfurt Auto Show, with production scheduled to start towards the end of next year. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports that Mercedes will be combining the four-cylinder oil-burner with its new mild-hybrid system to achieve the amazingly low consumption figures.
Mercedes previously showcased a Bluetec hybrid S-Class concept at the 2005 Frankfurt Auto Show, but unlike the concept car which featured a V6 powerplant, the production version will run a twin-turbo four-cylinder motor that produces 204hp.
The vehicle will be in full compliance with future Euro 6 emissions standards, which are expected to roll in by 2014, and we should see its efficient powertrain eventually offered in the E and C-class range. | | | | | The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to Tycoon For This Useful Post: | | | Connoisseur

Oh well, like they care for me anyways... | Pardon me but my dad used to own a W220 S280. Underpowered, I agree, but more than sufficient for city driving. Quote:

Anyway, althought I feel the same way about the prestige of the S-Class being diluted with this 4-cyl, I'm thinking, if it produces enough power than the engines it replaces, then why not? | | | | | GCZ's High Court
