I think it's the same with the S 550 (also E 550, SL 550 etc)
It is called S 550 everywhere, but here in Europe, especially in Germany, it is still called S 500 (although it has an 5.5 litres engine now).
The S 280 has a 3.0 litres engine...so they call it S 300 - don't ask for the reason!? | | | | | Contributor

I think MB should call them what they actually are, when and wherever it doesn't pose a conflict or confusion.
I'm thinking that the next generation V12 will be a 6.6L V12, naturally aspirated, but they'll call it a "600" in most markets, but here in the U.S. it will be the S660. It might 6.5L and then of course the S650, don't like that as much.

A S-Class with less then 200hp? I don't think that there would be a market for such a car... | | | | | Member

And looking at the specs of the current W221 S280, it is by no means slow or underpowered. How many S550 or S600 owners do you know who floor their car at every opportunity? Exactly. Not many. | As it were, the W126 500 SE and SEL originally had "only" 231 hp, don't remember anyone complaining back then. A sense of perspective is a rare thing these days, due to the German power wars

0-100 in 8.2 sec and people think its slow.
In my book anything under 9 is decent. | | | | | The Photo Phanatic

If someone buys an S280 in the first place, they're not interested in performance. They want an S-Class with a smaller, more efficient engine for the sake of keeping costs down, fuel consumption within reason and other factors (displacement taxes etc.).
If was going to live in the city with my S-Class, I'd sure as hell not order an S550 or S600. I'd be looking at the S280, S320 CDI and possibly the S350. | | | | | Fanatic

If it is smooth, silent and refined, why not?
You don't buy an S-Class for its performances, but for its silence, comfort.
Just needs effortless acceleration, and not a noisy little motor crying under the weight of the S. I think the S300 has enough power to deal with the weight in silent, so I think it is good.
For the name, it is because we Europeans love history. And S500 is a magical number for us, full of history, mythical models. Just like 300.
So evocative for us, of all these glorious Mercedes...300 Adenauer, 300SL... 500SEC, 500SL, S500... Whereas 550 or 280 does not mean anything to us. | | | | | The Following 2 Users Say Thank You to coolraoul For This Useful Post: | | | Member

We have S280 here over 10 years ago (from W140). By the way, S300 (S280) costs around 200,000USD at the moment. That's why we have S300 here. The worst thing is, it is detuned to 219hp. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to BKK-ES For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
