The mother-of-pearl is used as an optional inlay - the owner can pretty much have anything they want - a monogram, a family crest perhaps, a company logo - or the Rolls-Royce logo.

In the picture below (sorry it's not larger) you can see they have created a mother-of-pearl inlay of the "Spirit Of Ecstasy" (flying Lady mascot) on the door.

Interesting. You mean that little grey speck above the front of what looks like the interior handle?

My opinion is that mother-of-pearl is an odd material for a car - it's irregular and organic (in the broad sense of the word) such that it's never going to be a material for machines to work with. Wood is the same, to an extent - and yes, it is this natural irregularity that gives it its purpose and its appeal - but at least with wood you can shape it into planks and whatnot.

Anyhow donau, I think they were being metaphorical in the article - referring to the doors as "clap hand doors" - maybe it's what Rolls-Royce prefers to call them rather than "suicide doors" - although I think they refer to them as "coach doors"

- now I have to go and clean myself up a bit....I am literally covered in coffee....luckily it wasn't hot.
