Does it remind you of the Porsche Carrera GT?

....because that is what I immediately thought of when I first saw it.

Preview: 2009 Audi R8 Spider

Last month an official drawing of the R8 Spider was leaked, revealing that designers are opting for a removable targa-style roof rather than a complicated and space-consuming folding hardtop or fabric roof. Apart from the missing top, other major changes for the new Spider are the two vented roadster style bumps behind each seat feeding cold air to the engine and the truncated aluminum side blades.
The placement of the fuel filler cap will also be changed due to the missing rear pillars, while changes under the sheetmetal will likely include extra chassis strengthening, adding to the car’s kerb weight. Because of this, top speed will likely be lower than the coupe’s 301km/h rating.
Audi plans to begin sales of the R8 Spider in 2009 with the same 4.2L V8 churning out 420hp as the RS4 and R8 Coupe. Following the arrival of the new R8 Spider, Audi is expected to launch a new RS prepped version of the super-coupe that’s likely to be called the Rs-R8.

Audi R8 Convertible Rumor Emerges

It seems whenever there is some hot car floating around out there, rumors begin to fly about how the automaker plans to keep that car fresh in everyone's mind. The Audi R8 is no different.

Speculation has been out for quite some time that Audi was considering an R8 convertible. Audi has certainly not confirmed this to anyone. Certainly not helping matters is the belief that Audi will make a pretty strong unveiling at the LA Auto Show in a few days.

In response to the rumors, or possibly fueling them, some new renderings of a proposed R8 Spider have been floating around a few web sites. We stumbled upon these at Autogespot. They have a few more Photoshops on their sites.

One thing is for sure: we will be waiting (im)patiently at the Audi stand on November 14th at 11:10am California time when they begin their presentation to the media.
