CAR Magazine - Thought for the day: is Porsche a sports car maker?

Here's a brain-teaser for a Friday morning. Which is Porsche's best-selling car? The cheapest maybe? An affordable Boxster or Cayman, say? Perhaps the bedrock of its range, the evergreen – and now 29mpg – 911? Nope, it's the Cayenne, Porsche's butch, brash SUV that's done so much harm to the brand, according to the naysayers. Not according to the latest sales stats.

I'd heard that the big 4x4 was Porsche's best-seller before, but it's worth investigating the bigger picture. In the 2007-08 financial year, Porsche sold the following worldwide:

• 45,000 Cayennes
• 31,000 of the 911
• 22,000 Caymans and Boxsters

Makes you realise why sports car firms are diversifying. You only have to look at the mad scramble into the luxury limo class – Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin Rapide and now the Lamborghini Estoque – to realise that these guys are desperate to find new revenue streams before sports car sales fall off a cliff.

Well from that picture, three out of four are basicly 'real' sports cars, so my answer to the Q in the title is a resounding YES.

Stupid article. The 911 is more expensive than the Cayenne and is 1/5th as practical...it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out it will likely sells less.

Preach! And looking at the sales the Cayenne only out sells the 911 with one third which isn't much considering how less practical and more expensive the 911 is.

I'm quite surprised that the Cayman and Boxter combined are at the bottom of the list. I would have thought it would be above the 911. While some people can't stand the idea of the entry level P car, I think a Boxter S, in black with some 19" rims look stunning.

Yeah the Boxster is an excellent car but it competes in a highly crowded segment. Most people in search for a car in that price look for value i.e some form of practicality as well as plenty of power. There's too much of spec sheets which is why some don't even test Boxster although the power is sufficient. Secondly it's a Porsche meaning it's highly expensive to equip with options. IMO the car needs a new push such as a bold design because it has hardly changed since the first generation and in that way hasn't introduced new customers.
