Re: EVO magazine ranking list of iconic cars

I've been looking through this thread occassionally and I think it is time for me to comment and share my thoughts.

THIS LIST IS INCREDIBLY SPORTSCAR BIASED

There are a lot of iconic sportscars out there, but there are many more iconic cars out there that might not be as glitzy or fast. Here are some German cars which are iconic IMO and deserve to be on that list. Again, IMO.

Audi
Horch 853A
Quattro
Sport Quattro

BMW
327/328
Isetta, 600 and 700
502, 503 and 507
2000 CS / 3.0 CSi / 3.0 CSL
M1
635 CSi M
2002 Turbo
1985 M3 & M5

Mercedes-Benz
SSK & SSKL
500K Spezial Roadster
540K
770 Großer Mercedes
300SL Gullwing / Roadster and perhaps the 190SL
Pagoda SL
300SEL 6.3
450SEL 6.9
450SLC 5.0
190E 2.3 / 2.5-16V

Opel
Rallye Kadett
GT
Manta
Rekord D
Monza

Porsche
356
901
911 / 912
914
Carrera RS 2.7
Turbo (original)
959

Volkswagen
Beetle
VW Bus (1950s)
Karmann-Ghia
1970s Golf

To me, the Pagani Zonda is not an icon, YET. In a decade or two, perhaps, but not now.

This is EVO we are talking about, the magazine only talks about sportscars and supercars!

For them, something like a Clio 197 is an ordinary car!

Re: EVO magazine ranking list of iconic cars

Not necessarily just sportscars and supercars. EVO is a performance car oriented publication so lots of reviews of all sorts of cars in the driven section - including SUVs.

Their tagline is "The Thrill of Driving" so any cars that are worthy of mention as being good fun to drive are covered, for example the Suzuki Swift and the Fiat Panda 100 HP.

The majority of the EVO readership is mainly interested in performance motoring, hence the skewed voting toward performance icons.

Even so there are a lot of german icons missing.

The MB "Porsche" S/SS/SSK/SSKL, MB 300 SL, BMW 328 and Audi Quattro S1 were finalist for the Car Of The Century.
And that's just the tip of the ice-berg.

Were are if they are sport car supercar biased ?!
These cars had a great impact on the automotive world.

Re: EVO magazine ranking list of iconic cars

Well, to calm the rants about not having classic German cars on here....I too was wondering where all the historical cars were in the rankings.

This is a POLL, done by EVO for its reader-audience. Assuming most of them are sports oriented, biased towards performance cars like Christian already mentioned. Obviously their votes will be towards those performance cars that have set new boundaries, records, and pushed the envelope of the sports car world.

We lose cars like the Gullwing and VW Beetle etc.

I think the Zonda is a fantastic car, my super car of choice. However, I don't think it has existed long enough to be on this list undisputedly.

The icons of GCZ is obviously different than EVO, but its interesting to see what the majority of EVOs readers think and how they view the automotive field.
