- M & SLK = boringly & blandishly overconservative, but very good with AMG.

Geez, there's no pleasing some people! Here we have two examples of MB improving models exponentially over the previous generations. These cars are far from conservative. Both these cars have already achieved what their predecessors couldn't even dream about - up to date looks, high quality, prestige and a great drive. As far as I'm concerned, Mercedes is on the path to recovery.
As for the comment about over-Americanisation of MB design and influence, well, all I can say is as a car maker you'd be stupid if you didn't target your cars with specific appeal for Americans. Unfortunately, multinational companies can't afford not to tailor their products towards one of the biggest consumer markets in the world. It's the same with almost any other global product.
130i? It may be a great drive, but its looks are controversial, the practicality of which is expected by small car buyers is non-existent, and its damned expensive!

Well, I don't like the design, I do however like the enginering underneath.
Heck even I voted for the S klasse, but that's beacause of the car underneath, not it's horible IMO design.
And BTW, the X3 needs a package, like ACS to be acteptable to my eyes. And I never like the previous generation 5 series (except for the M5), nor did
I liked the FL previous gen. 7er.
In '97-'98 for me was like, how could BMW do something like this, ugly-fing two of my favorites car, those models who were perfection incarnated in my eyes. For my, it was Bangle who "saved" BMW's medium and big sedans.
And the 1er, is less practical than the rest cause it's RWD, not FWD like the rest. If it would have been FWD, it would have been a betrayal of BMW's philosophy and a competor for upcoming MINI models.
Even BMW top execs said, you wan't driving pleasure you buy the bimmer, you wan't space you buy a MB, Audi, VW or Opel. Yes, a BMW top exec said to buy Mercs and Co. if you want space.
