Road Rockets For The Autobahn. - 04-22-2006, 03:40 PM

Germany doesn't need a space program. It has the Autobahn. High on the to-do list of any self-respecting auto enthusiast, driving the German Autobahn is Himmel on earth. But if you're going to do it, you need the right venue and the right vehicle. It's often misunderstood, but only about half the system is without speed restrictions (much of it in the southern region). And while many modern European cars have 155-mph limiters installed, they're easily undone.

So here are some must-drive German cars for the must-drive German highway. We've even matched the rides and roads to optimize the experience.

1- Audi RS 4
2- BMW M6
3- Porsche 911 GT3
4- Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren
5- Porsche Carrera GT
6- Volkswagen GTI

I took my father's 745i to 142mph on I95, (will post pictures) but the most stable car at higher speeds is the W220 AMG. I was a passenger while we were doing 140-160mph. Benz has the high-speed stability down to a science!

I'd take the regular Porsche 997 CarreraS hehehe. That alone was plenty fast for Bahnstorming....at highspeeds that car could fly in 6th gear, no need to downshift with all the power. However, it wasn't as quite or smooth as an MB at highspeeds I would imagine, it was kind of loud. However, steering high speeds was still razor-sharp.
