You are right about that Imhotep Evil ...there are other examples I can think of too ...including the rather dreadful Austin Princess...

....but Mercedes, more than any other marque, seems to have taken the "wedge" shape as part of their styling identity.

Volvo aren't innocent either. Their cars produced during the 90s resembles the car children draw at the age of 8.

Well I know that the NSU Ro80 was a revolutionary car at its time in the late 60s.
That was the problem too.
The initial Wankel rotary engines were problematic and by the time problems were fixed NSU was swallowed into Audi.
The engines were replaced and the cars were sold as Audi 80 (i think).
The aerodynamics was also revolutionary 0.39 drag coeficient w big whells and 0.35 with small whells (in a 60s production car).
By contrast the Porsche 911 received a better drag coeficient that the NSU
20 years later

Another favorite of mine was the Citroen SM/Maserati Quattroporte II.

But my favorite would have to be the E34.

I don't have a problem with the wedge profile as such, only when it has been taken a little too far by the designers as is the case in the w203 and to a lesser extent the w209. The rear of the w203 sits so high up it looks awkward, very narrow and insubstantial, detracting completely from the sporting/agressive appeal intended by the wedge profile.

The CLK can also be accused of this, but to a much lesser degree. Roberto I dont believe the wedge profile has anything to do with the CLK looking dated, but rather the bland and banal detailing of the sheetmetal etc.

However, the w220 and w211 on a good set of decently sized alloys nailed the wedge profile to perfection!
