Sports Hybrid, Built by Kids, Runs on Soybeans, Zero-to-60 in 4 Seconds

The top auto designers in Detroit have been slam-dunked by a group of high school kids from Philadelphia who built the K-1 Attack Hybrid, a sports car that gets 50 miles per gallon and can go from zero to 60 in four seconds. During auto shop class, the group took a Honda Accord chassis, a Volkswagen turbo diesel engine and a 200hp electric motor, and put together a hybrid electric/biomass car that runs on soybeans. Now the car has won a race and is getting big-time press coverage all over the U.S.

The kicker? It beats the gas mileage/performance ratio of any production vehicle on the market today. It’s been a bad news week for the U.S. auto industry: First, American automakers aren’t occupying any of the top ten slots in Consumer Reports’ recommended vehicles this year, and now this? Wake up, Detroit!

I wish they would have autoshop classes in the UK. I so envy the american lifestyle and all the great oppurtunitys the kids over there have.

Ha! I don't think it was an autoshop class, couldn't be, maybe an engineering program at a governer / honors school or some place that has money. Certainly not a public school. Hell, just looking at the car it looked expensive to make. I doubt my college even has the budget for a project like that. We only have a poopy late model hybrid Explorer, not a super cool K-1 Attack.

Pic of the kit they used, not bad looking at all.

I'm sure the car is super light. They dont mention that it doesnt have any standard safety equipment that the government forces other cars to have, which adds a huge weight. Its not to difficult to make a light car quick, look at motorcycles.

The kit they used fully dressed weighs under 2000 pounds with a Honda V6, but the drivetrain they used could be heavier. They could have also added more stuff.
