How does one become a gearhead? - 03-02-2006, 02:34 AM

I know obviously you'd spend time under the hood. I don't though however. No freinds of mine are very interested in that sort of thing, and I just don't know anyone who does. I know quite a bit about cars, but when it comes to mechanicals and how things work specifically? I'm somewhat clueless. If any of you have suggestions I welcome them.

i don't know what a gearhead is, but i guess it has something to do with knowing much about how your car works. If my guess is right, then i'm not a good one. I may know pretty many things about engines and stuff, but i'm not a good one. I don't have the experience needed.

PS. Even though i could have studied as a mechanical engineer at univercity i don't regret anything i did..

Look around on the automotive section of how stuff works. It has a really good introduction to automobile mechanics.

I been to the site several times and its excellent for newbs who might know that a V8 engine is powerful but don't know how all the power produced gets to the wheels.

I don't know much about this stuff, but forums such as these have helped me understand atleast the very basics of a gearhead. Earlier it was just "OH WOW this car has so much hp and 0-100 is xx). Now atleast I'm aware of n/a gear ratios, superchargers, turbochargers, basics of the chassis and what effects handling etc.
