Interesting argument.

I think we obviously need to find other solutions than petrol. We have to drill out from always deeper, in always harder to access areas, or in protected areas like Siberia and the Arctic. This will induce skyrocketing prices and the loss of incomparable ecosystems.

I'm far from a treehugger, but this kind of practices is not acceptable.

On the other hand, Nuke is pretty much the worst of all.

- It is not as safe as everybody believes (France has a lot of those plants, and surprisingly, there are lots of cancers in the near areas of those plants...)

- it kills the ecosystems in the rivers it cools down from (takes the cold water, cools down with it, rejects the hotter water in the river, which irremediably changes the ecosystem)

- there is the waste problem. Producing waste that remains extremely dangerous for the next 1.000.000.000.000.0000 years is just criminal.
Burying them in the ocean, or in the ground, is worse. First, risk of loosing trace of it while it's still dangerous. Second, what it the earth moves with it into it? Third, do we know for sure burying them in vitrificated form is really safe?

And the nuclear fusion is still thousands of years away from being ready... It is spoken of since centuries and still not feasible.

Turning the Earth into a cancerous waste repository is not what I want to be reminded for by my childrens.

We need to invest more into solar/wind/temp-differential systems. We need to invest more into lightweight materials. The batteries must be improved to allow these new, renewable energy sources to become viable. We need to stop producing one bit on one area, the other elsewhere, and ship them separately to be assembled in a third area of the world. We need to produce where we sold, to reduce the transportations needs.

The whole system must be rethought. Changing from one motor type to another is not the solution, our whole economy, the whole capitalism in fact, has to be rethought entirely to adapt to the new needs. Globalism as we know it is not compatible with ecology. Capitalsm is incompatible with ecology, as its prime objective is to earn money... which is why it is not favouring the really ecologist solutions as they are not economically viable for now and will never be if nothing is done.

Saying that switching from the combustion engine to the electric engine is rather worst, as it will produce less pollution for us, but much more for the future generations. It is, for now, a very selfish and even criminal solution.

Weren't tiny particulates in diesel exhaust also linked to cancer?

It's an interesting article but it sounds totally biased towards diesel engines and diesel fuel. I agree with Monster that it doesn't come across as totally convincing - and I love diesels!

Wildlife really like the pipeline in the winter, the area around the pipe is warm.

Both of those aren't truly valid.

First: Coral Reef. It's been known for a long time that we've destroyed a LOT of coral reef, that's why we retire our ships by sinking them into the ocean and hoping a reef forms. That's not the same thing we're talking about.

Second: The pipeline running in Alaska is REALLY long, those pics can be taken anywhere. And no shit the animals (mammals) like being around something warm in the snow. So you're saying we should install pipelines every where so the animals can stay close to something warm?

The problem is the the oil spill that can happen and has happened, and the fact that to install those pipelines it takes lots of people and a lot of equipment, and all the animals nearby are scared away. Not to mention the installation of those things and cutting of many of those materials on site leaks a ton of bad stuff into the ground and streams near by. You can't just look on the surface of something and think thats it, there is a lot more going on that you can't see in the pic.

So why is it bad that group A years ago destroyed this reef and group B now builds a oil rig that replaces it?

I never said we should install pipelines everywhere, I said the evil pipelines don't harm or kill teddy bears.

Oil spills can happen and when they do, those responsible should be slammed hard.
But how many times has the Alaskan pipeline broken open and puked out across the artic tundra?
The pipelines are usually built in a way that all they need to do is piece them together no to little cutting needed.
